Hermantown senior Abe Soumis was named to the 2023-24 watch list for Mr. Basketball of Minnesota, the Mr. Basketball Committee announced this week. The list includes 35 of the top senior boys basketball players from across the state.
The Top 10 will be announced on February 26 and the Final Five will be announced on March 17. The winner of the 2024 Mr. Basketball award will be announced following the State Basketball tournaments.
Soumis has twice set the Hawks' single-game scoring record this season, first with 41 points at Princeton on Dec. 12 and again with 43 points against Becker in the Lake Superior Classic on Jan. 6. Soumis added 23 rebounds and 11 assists against the Bulldogs for his first triple-double of the new year.
The senior set another program single-game record with 14 assists against Cloquet on Jan. 11 on his way to another triple double - 34 points and 19 rebounds - to go along with the 14 assists.
The Hawks have won nine of their last 10 games, including six-straight, and are averaging 97 points per game in their last five outings. Hermantown has scored over 100 points twice in January, putting up a season-high 106 points at Cloquet and 102 points at Rock Ridge.
Two road games are on the schedule for the Hawks - at Bemidji (1/16) and at Duluth Denfeld (1/23) - before they return home for three-straight games vs. Duluth Marshall (1/25), Grand Rapids (2/1) and Proctor (2/2).
