Howie's Hawks Activities Notebook - August 5, 2024
Hermantown boys hockey coach Patrick Andrews, on his team's strong performance in a summer tournament in Proctor last weekend – "We had a great weekend. The boys competed really hard, which is all we can ask for in a summer scrimmage weekend (Skors: Benilde-St. Margaret's 4, Hawks 2; Hawks 5, St Cloud Cathedral 2; Hawks 2, Mahtomedi 0). The summer scrimmage weekend provided a great conclusion to our summer workouts and an exciting glimpse into the season ahead. Seniors River Freeman and Henry Peterson both stood out with their play and leadership. We have a very good group of returners complimented by a very skilled group of sophomores coming up from bantams. If the summer tournament is any indication, we have a very exciting season ahead of us this winter."

Andy Fenske, Hermantown High boys basketball coach, on the Hawks' summer training – "After graduating the group of seniors we had last year, we've been working on finding what that new look for us will be. We've had some young guys step into new roles they played last year, including seniors Blake Sundland and Alex Schott, juniors Landon Burg and Lance Janson, and sophomore Sawyer Senst. Those five guys saw some minutes throughout last season. We've also had a lot of great looks at some other players, including Ben and Blake Sundland, Corbin Petcoff and Nick Radsovich. When we've been playing games, we've gone about 12 players in total playing per game. That's due to finding new combinations and guys doing wonderful things for us. Since it's summertime, our rosters are always changing with family trips, other activities and jobs, which is great. We love having well-rounded athletes who have interests outside of hoops. This past week, we wrapped up our Thursday league play and a UMD Team Camp. We have one more chance at the end of the summer jamboree that Duluth East hosts at Ordean."
