Hermantown boys basketball coach Andy Fenske said he isn’t the least bit discouraged by his young team’s 1-7 overall record. Injuries and youth have challenged the Hawks early in the season.
“Despite what the win column shows, we're getting things on the right track,” the veteran Hawks coach said. “We have moments where we've had great looks on both ends of the floor for our team. On the plus side, we've had our players come back from injuries and make big impacts for us. On the downside, these guys are still working out how to play together some more yet. The only way we can get over that hurdle is with time and more games.”
The Hawks will host nonconference Milaca (1-5) at 7:15 p.m. today.
“Milaca is a late add to the schedule after we had a team drop us in late October,” said Fenske. “While we're always gunning for a win, we're playing to get guys in the right spot come March time to be as ready as we can be.”
Senior guard Alex Schott has continued to step up and provide momentum for Hermantown anytime he's on the court, Fenske said.
“Alex had some great statistical games, but his leadership has also helped us through some of our rough times,” said Fenske. “We've had great moments from Blake and Ben Sundland as well as Sawyer Senst. Corin Petcoff and James Kleist have had some great flashes, whether they are coming off the bench or in the starting lineup. Both have been ready to go at a moment's notice.”
