Hermantown will wrap up a 10-game road stretch with games at Superior on Tuesday and Mesabi East Thursday.
In recent games, the Hawks lost at East Grand Forks 58-52, defeated host Crookston 67-53, lost at Rock Ridge 85-56 and Proctor 75-52, and won at Hibbing 67-41.
“We had a great opportunity to learn what it is like to play on the road and out of the normal routine,” Hawks coach Eric Borndal said of the East-Grand Forks-Crookston road games. “We have found that foul trouble -- especially early in the game -- can really hurt our chance to win and look to improve on this.
“This past week we saw two excellent teams in Rock Ridge and Proctor. We were certainly humbled a bit as neither game was very close in the second half. However, I appreciate the fact that the girls understood that this is where we hope to be by the end of the season and instead of turning against one another have rallied together and I believe learn from our first losing streak of the season and build to make us more competitive come playoff time.”
Standout guard Bailey Hermanson continues to be a consistent scorer and is really improving in getting her teammates the ball, especially in transition, Borndal said.
“Aurora Decker and Olivia Johnson need to continue to get more touches in the paint for us to be competitive and they have taken on the challenge of making sure we try to out-rebound every team,” said Borndal. “We are certainly still learning a lot about each other in the second half of the season and it will be very fun to see how our seniors (Oliva, Izzy, Hope, Annika, and Mikayla) lead this team down the stretch.”
The Hawks’ goal is to see Rock Ridge again as they are the clear favorite in our section, Borndal said.
“If we can continue to buy into playing for each other I have a lot of faith in this team,” Borndal added.
